Artist's Comments

My christmas card this year. And also, an on time (for the first time ever) submission to the :iconchildrensillustrator: monthly topic.

Please full view, so you can see all the cool stuff in the window scene. I went overboard. And I have no idea if the colors are right/okay because it was finished on my laptop, and the screen tilt color variability is maddening! If weeks from now this updates, you'll know I saw it on my home monitor and though "oh UGH" ;-)

A Little Holiday Magic by ~fyr3lyt3 is so cute that, despite the season being over, I had to feature it! (Suggested by `Jules1983 and Featured by ^DCZed)

The short version:
Very nice!

The long version:
The colors are good on my moniter, though I know of what you speak. The color pallet is very nice, manages to convey a snowy Christmas, but using a slighty warm range of colors. The composition, while simple, is perfect for the subject. It is easy to balance, but it isn't mirror. Plus, there are special little things like the texture pattern.

I know you mentioned finishing on the computer, but how did it start?

They best way to learn is to do it wrong and go from there.

Thanks for the long version! I always want the long version if there is one, even if its just things someone thinks I did right :-) Its always helpful. (Thanks for mentioning the colors. Still on that laptop...still questioning the contrast a bit ;-)

I usually start with a number of sketches on paper. Not the full image in detail generally, more layout thumbnails and then rough sketches of bits I want to work out like the girl in the red coat. Then I fill in the final art digitally over the scanned sketch.

Gorgeous! This has a wonderful sort of vintage feel to it. The colors are perfect and I love the line quality. The little girl is adorable and I love the cats and birds in the window! ^^

Very classy. I like that you used a subtle look and captured the Christmas feeling wonderfully, without throwing tincel and bold red and green all over. The composition of the piece adds intrigue. The only one niggle is the floor seems perhaps not to match the rest of the image, although it is all awesome
:icongyroscope:
great, but i think more snow would've given it more of an atmosphere.
